Fishing inshore this week we can expect lots of sheepshead, snapper, snook, redfish, trout, flounder, & pompano. Snook fishing has been good on an incoming tide around local docks, deeper mangrove shorelines, & near local inlets. Further up river we can expect to catch lots of sheepshead, pompano, jacks, croaker, flounder, & redfish when fishing shrimp on or near the bottom. Pompano fishing has been hit or miss along the sailfish flats using pompano rigs or goofy jigs.
Nearshore fishing has been on fire for Spanish, mackerel & bluefish over the past week. Also mixed in are some cobia, flounder, pompano, bonefish and snapper. Fishing jigs or flashy lures with a fast retrieve will catch plenty of blues & spanish mackerel. Fishing bait on the bottom will produce a variety of species this time of year when fishing nearshore wrecks and reefs. Expect bigger lane snapper in coming weeks as they tend to make a strong showing in Dec/ January along local reefs an wrecks.
Sailfish has been the main focus this week. Sails are being caught locally in 90′-160′ over the past few days. Some nice gaffer mahis are mixed in as well. Trolling dead ballyhoo on circle hook rigs have been working the best for covering ground an maximizing bites. Slow trolling live greenies around bait schools will yield lots of bites as well. Slightly inshore in 70′-140′ we are getting a lot of kingfish an bonita action. Bottom fishing remains strong on deeper reefs and wrecks for larger snapper, grouper, porgies, & cobia. Expect good fishing following cold fronts as they move down the coast.
